Hagen&#8217;s instructions and examples guide the user through practical problems such as: &#8220;How do I talk to the audience?&#8221; and &#8220;How do I stay fresh in a long run?&#8221;. She advocates the actor&#8217;s use of\u00a0<a title=\"Substitution (theatre)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Substitution_(theatre)\">substitution<\/a>\u00a0in informing and shaping the actions of the character the actor is playing.<\/p><p>Hagen later said that she &#8220;disassociated&#8221; herself from\u00a0<i>Respect for Acting<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Respect_for_Acting#cite_note-1\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>1<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In a follow-up book,\u00a0<i>Challenge for the Actor<\/i>\u00a0(1991), she renamed &#8220;substitution&#8221; as &#8220;transference&#8221;.
